GOD'S FRUIT: GOJI COMBAT CANCER
All glory is given to God in all the articles that I write about Food and Cancer. In Genesis 1:29, 31, it is recorded, "And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be meat. (v. 31) And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day. "
POLITICIAN WITH PROSTATE CANCER
I read in the Toronto Star, July 8, 2010 that Jack Layton, leader of the NDP (New Democratic Party) of Canada who had prostate cancer was treated with goji (wolfberry), and I decided to write an article on goji.
"Layton has been following a strict diet that includes broccoli, cooked tomatoes and an Asian berry called goji, known for its medicinal qualities and health benefits.
After Layton announced publicly in February he has prostate cancer, almost every member of Parliament wore a teal-and-blue-striped tie or scarf - the colours of Prostate Cancer Canada -inside the House of Commons in support of his fight."
Layton, who has lost up to 20 pounds battling cancer since February, says his team of doctors is pleased with his progress and the fact that his PSA levels are back to normal. Prostate-specific antigen is a type of protein that is produced in a man's prostate gland."
GOJI GOOD FOR EYESIGHT
My dentist, Dr. Richard C. Wang, D.D.S. told me that his mother (90 years) took goji berries every day and she continued to do so for her eyesight was still perfect. He continues to carry on the tradition of taking goji berries and blueberries for good eyesight.
I also take goji and blueberries for my eyesight. I buy dried goji from Chinese supermarket or Chinese Herbal shops and they are fairly cheap. First, I boil a handful of goji berries in one cup of boiling water, add a couple of dried prunes or raisins. Boil them for about five to eight minutes, and add a few tablespoon full of minute oatmeal for breakfast. The Chinese have used goji for good eyesight for thousands of years.
GOJI BERRIES
Goji berries grow in China, Mongolia and Tibet. They have been introduced to the United Kingdom. in 1730s, known as Argyll's Tea Tree. The berries are found dried and look like shriveled red raisins, but slightly longer and fairly hard.
Wikipedia
United Kingdom
The Duke of Argyll introduced the plant into the United Kingdom in the 1730s where it is known as Duke of Argyll's Tea Tree . It was and still is used for hedging, especially in coastal districts. Its red berries are attractive to a wide variety of British birds.[18] The plant continues to grow wild in UK hedgerows. On 15 January 2003, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs launched a project to improve the regulations protecting traditional countryside hedgerows, and specifically mentioned Duke of Argyll's Tea Tree as one of the species to be found growing in hedges located in Suffolk Sandlings, Hadley, Bawdsey, near Ipswich, and Walberswick.[19] The wolfberry has been naturalized as an ornamental and edible plant in the UK for nearly 300 years. On June 18, 2007, the FSA (UK Food Standards Agency) stated that there was a significant history of the fruit being consumed in Europe before 1997, and has removed it from the Novel Foods list [20]. It is now legal to sell the wolfberry in the UK as a food as reported by the British Food Standards Agency [21].(also see discussion below, Marketing claims under scrutiny in Europe ).

Effects on Cancer
Another website tells us that in China, "researchers claim that the goji berry is beyond a prevention for cancer, but reveal [sic] that it is a cure for cancer!"
"Tibetan Goji berries are now undergoing intense scrutiny as a cancer drug in Mongolia, China, Japan and Switzerland," says another.
"The Himalayan Goji Berry can add 20 years to your life, shut down cancer cells, supercharge your immune system and rev up your love life! Believe it or Not," says yet another website.
A Single Report
This leaves a single report of a clinical trial in cancer using a goji extract. It was carried out by G.W. Cao and colleagues at the Second Military Medical University in Shanghai and published in a Chinese medical publication, the Chinese Journal of Oncology . Seventy-nine patients with advanced cancer were enrolled in a trial in which they were treated with lymphocyte-activated killer (LAK) cells + interleukin-2 (IL-2). But some of the patients also received polysaccharides (complex sugars) derived from Lycium barbarum (abbreviated LBP).
Initial results of the treatment from 75 evaluable patients indicated that "objective regression of cancer was achieved in patients with malignant melanoma, renal cell carcinoma, colorectal carcinoma, lung cancer, nasopharyngeal carcinoma." It also was supposedly effective in "malignant hydrothorax" (which presumably refers to pleural effusion, a collection of fluid within the chest cavity which frequently accompanies thoracic cancers).
According to this Chinese article, the response rate of patients treated with LAK + IL-2 alone was 16.1 percent. But when goji extract was given to some patients the response rate jumped to 40.9 percent. The authors also state that the remission in patients treated with LAK + IL-2 plus goji extract lasted significantly longer and led to a more marked increase in natural killer (NK) cell activity than LAK + IL-2 alone.
"The results indicate that LBP can be used as an adjuvant in the biotherapy [i.e., immunotherapy] of cancer," the authors concluded.
This is a potentially important finding. A juice that can double the response rate to standard cancer treatment would be worth many multiples of $44. However, there remain numerous questions about this clinical trial that might be difficult to answer, since all there is to go on is an abstract in PubMed. The full article is in a Chinese journal that does not maintain an English-language website. Dr. Gao is the co-author of just seven PubMed articles, none of which gives his contact information."
Additionally, this Chinese study uses a non-standard therapy for many of these cases, i.e. LAK + IL-2. This was a "hot" therapy in the 1980s and early 1990s, primarily because of the advocacy of Steven Rosenberg, MD, of the National Cancer Institute (Rosenberg 1993). But is rarely used today. Indeed, the NCI has stated that the addition of LAK to IL-2 has "not improved response rates or durable remissions sufficiently to merit the expense and complexity of this therapy" (NCI 2004).
Therefore, although I am intrigued by Dr. Gao's findings, I would still recommend that patients hold onto their $44 until there is better documentation of the drink's purported effects."
STUDIES on GOJI
In traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), goji is renowned as the premier adaptogen, meaning it can help the body to adapt to changes and stress.
Some of the traditionally reported benefits of adaptogens include: enhanced immune function, increased energy, and enhanced mental clairty and perception. In Asia, no adaptogen is more revered than goji. The goji berry is also considered to be a tonic in that it helps to keep the vital organs and energies in tone. TCM has identified some herbs as liver tonics, and others as kidney tonics. But goji is held in such high regard that it has been deemed a supertonic, meaning it can help to balance the structures and functions of the entire body.

Goji has been used for thousands of years by the Chinese for various ailments. However, the west have not really caught on to it.
Tibetan Goji berries are now undergoing intense scrutiny as a cancer drug in Mongolia, China, Japan and Switzerland.
In the beginning of creation, God had already told us of the benefits of eating the herbs and fruits of the earth. Now society is slowly but surely accepting this concept. All glory to God.
