GOD'S MANIFESTATION: HOLY SPIRIT (SYMBOLISM) (1) WATER

The Holy Spirit is the greatest power of God's manifestations to wield His will on God's people. The power of the Holy Spirit is limitless and is multi-faceted like a flawless diamond and shines brilliantly from all its facets. No matter which facet one faces, its brilliance and penetrating rays light up the world of despair and darkness.

The Holy Spirit has many symbols to depict different traits, for example, the water symbol represents life for man and plants cannot survive without water for a long time. The human body is 70% water. In arid areas like deserts, plants do not flourish as in temperate or tropical areas.

The purpose of using symbolism is to add understanding, to illustrate more clearly the truth and to shed more light on the subject. Symbolism should never replace the Word of God as written in the Scriptures. The Word of God cannot be compared and should not be replaced with a much lesser meaning.

Water sustains life and as a symbol of the Holy Spirit and is essential for cleansing our sins through water and blood of Jesus in baptism. When a person believes in Jesus Christ, he goes through baptism to be a follower for his or her former life will be transformed and cleansed of all sins to start afresh as a new born Christ follower.

Hebrews 10:19-22

Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water.

Acts 2:38

Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus for the remission of sins,

Acts 22:16

Arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins,

1. I John 5:7-8

• For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.
• And there are three that bear bear witness in earth, the Spirit, the water and the blood: and these three agree in one.

2. Ephesians 5:26

• That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word.

3. John 3:5

• Except a man be born of water (Baptism) and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.

1 Corinthians 10:2

• And were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea.

This baptism typifies Israel passing through the Red Sea and God opened a way in the sea on to dry ground for the Israelites to walk on. It was their faith at that time that saved them. Only baptism in the name of Jesus Christ can cleanse all sins.

Micah 7:19

• Thou wilt cast all their sins into the depths of the sea.

1 Peter 3:20

• Eight souls were saved by water.

Isaiah 51:10

• That hath made the depths of the sea a way for the ransomed to pass over?

After the last supper Jesus had with His disciples, he took a towel, girded himself, poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples feet. This symbolizes humility on the part of the master serving the servant. The custom of the Jews was for the servant to wash the feet of his master and friends who visited the household. Those who wish to be great must be like the master who served the servant, a reversal of roles.

This is a sacrament of our church because Jesus instituted footwashing, performed it and commanded the disciples to observe it.

John 13:14,15

• If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet ye also ought to wash one another's feet.
• For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you.

John 13:8

• If I wash thee not, thou has no part with me.

A true Christian must follow the commandments of Jesus in word and in deed. Without following in action, the follower is like a hollow believer, obeying with the lips, but not whole heartedly..

The foot washing by Jesus Christ indicates the great love of the Lord (John 13:1). To set an example before his disciples, Jesus the Master washed their feet to show His humility and the disciples should follow His example.

LOVE

As disciples, we should love the Lord and love another with our heart and strength (John 13:34-35; 1 John 3:16-18).

FEET SYMBOLIZES BEHAVIOUR

After our baptism in the name and blood of Jesus Christ, we are free from all sins, but from then on, our behaviour must be free from iniquity (Proverbs 4:26-27).

Ephesians 5:26-27

• That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word ... but that it should be holy and without blemish.

SHOWS FORGIVENESS

Jesus showed forgiveness to Judas Iscariot by washing his feet even He knew that Judas would betray Him (John 13:11,12). Jesus hoped that by showing forgiveness, Judas would repent.

FORGIVING SEVENTY TIMES SEVEN

Unlimited forgiveness (Matthew 18:21-25).

TO BE A PART WITH THE LORD

• If I wash thee not, thou has no part with me (John 13:8).

Water can be viewed in a spiritual or ordinary sense. Whichever view one takes, water is very important in the life of a person. Water also makes up to 70% of the human body in weight. Although it is present in all parts of the body, but more in organs such as lungs,brain and fluids such as blood, lymph, saliva and secretions by the organs of the digestive system. We feel thirsty whenever our body needs more water. Inadequate water in some or all parts of the body can lead to several major diseases. Medicines may cure some diseases, but not all.

Water as symbolism is very effective and conveys the exact meaning for water can cleanse completely, and it can sustains life.
