Introduction to the Prophecy

Isaiah, one of the major prophets prophesied about 740 B.C. when King Uzziah died (Isaiah 6:1). He prophesied in Judah for more than 40 years during a period of moral and political upheaval.

The Book of Isaiah presents more power of observation or discernment than any other book of the Old Testament.

When Jesus begins His ministry, He quotes from Isaiah 61:1-2 mentioned in Luke 4:18-19. "The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me; because the Lord hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound."

PROPHECY - Isaiah 4:1

"And in that day seven women shall take hold of one man, saying, "We will eat our own bread and wear our own apparel Only let us be called by thy name To take away our reproach."

Explanation

The day (future to Isaiah's prophecy c. 740 B.C.) will come when all the women (church, bride to be of Christ) will take hold (seize, gain possession, win, captivate charm, conduct, adopt, interpret, to operate) of one man (Jesus Christ) saying, "We will eat our own bread (own Manna, own words of life, own doctrine) and wear our own apparel (own garments of salvation or robe of righteousness); only let us be called by thy name (Jesus, Christian) to take away our reproach (shame, scorn, disgrace).

The prophesy foretells the time when all the churches will call themselves Christians in name only because they will preach their own doctrines and explain their own interpretation of righteousness ignoring the commandments of God. They believe that in calling themselves Christians will take away their shame.

John 4:23-24

But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him. God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.

John 8:47

He who is of God hears God's words; therefore you do not hear, because you are not of God.

Symbolism in Scripture

In That Day

What will happen in days to come. Isaiah prophesied in 740 B.C. about what will happen in the New Testament about the preaching of Jesus Christ. Jesus appeared more than three thousand years later.

Seven

A sacred number among the Jews, also indicating perfection or completion. It was used very often in a symbolic manner for the whole of a thing.

The number seven entered very largely into the religious life and observances of the Jews.

Seven spirits (Rev.1:4); Seven times wash in Jordan (2 Kings 5:10,14);

Seven stars (Rev. 1:16; 2:1; 3:1); Seven years (Gen. 29:18);

Seven years of famine (2 Sam. 24:13).

Seven women would signify a complete number of churches.

Woman - Church

The Lamb's wife signifies the Church of Jesus Christ.

Lamb's wife (Rev. 21:9); Jerusalem as bride for the Lamb (Rev. 21:2)

Worship at Jerusalem (John 4:21); Word of the Lord from Jerusalem (Isa. 2:3; Mic. 4:2).

The women mentioned in this verse would mean all the Christian Churches. The seven churches mentioned by John in Revelation 1 and 2 signify

(1) the Active Church, sound in doctrine but deficient in love;

(2) the Poor but Rich Church;

(3) the Heretical Church;

(4) the Church of the False Prophetess;

(5) the Dying Church;

(6) the Loyal Church (Re.3:8 - thou has a little strength);

(7) the Lukewarm, Self-Satisfied Church.

Man - Jesus, Son of Man

Son of man hath not where to lay (Mat. 8:20; Luke 9:58)

Son of man hath power on earth to (Mat. 9:6; Mark 2:10; Luke 5:24)

Son of man is Lord even of Sabbath (Mat. 12:8; Mark 2:28)

Jesus is referred to as the Son of Man.

Bread - Words of God

Jesus ... the bread of life (John 6:32)

Bread of deceit (Pro. 20:17)

Leaven of bread (Mat. 16:12) of Pharisees and Sadducees

True bread from heaven (John 6:32-33) words of God

When the women eat their own bread, they will not preach the truth for Jesus said He is the bread of life (John 6:35, 40).

Words of God

Apparel - White Raiment, heavenly Garment

Garments of salvation (Isa. 61:10; Ps. 132:16)

Robe of Righteousness (Job 29:14)

White raiment (Re. 3:5) He that overcometh, ... clothed in white raiment.

Four and twenty elders sitting, clothed in white raiment (Re. 4:4)

Clothed with white robes (Re.7:9) Instead of preaching righteousness they are not clothed in garments of salvation.

I appreciate your boldness in recognizing the religious state of the church :having the form of godliness, but denying the power thereof.I pray the LORD restore his holy bride to himself as we await his second coming.

lawrence24,

Thanks for your comments on my boldness in recognizing the religious state of the church.

The Lord will definitely restore His holy bride to Himself. Christians now recognize that they must worship God in spirit and in truth. The Church cannot just gild the lily. Truth will be out.

Unless the Church is perfect in all ways, the Lamb of God cannot claim an imperfect bride. We see and hear of churches changing their ways for the better. The good churches will be better and the bad ones will get worse.

Sixty Methodist churches have changed worshipping God from Sunday back to Saturday as the original day of Sabbath as recorded in Genesis 2:2-3. "And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it;"

The United Church of Canada has split because of gay marriages and the Anglican Church is threatening to split also because of ordination of gay ministers. The Seventh Day Adventist Church has split because of the Sabbath Day. No where else in the Bible is there any verse which says that God has blessed Sunday as a day of rest.

Read the sequel to Prophecy: Isaiah 4:1 and I would like to know your comments!

lawrence24,

Thank you for your comments about my boldness in recognizing the religious state of the church. As Christians, we must be bold to uphold the truth and not hide anything. Truth will always come out in the end. You cannot gild the lily.

God is surely but steadfastly restoring his holy bride for himself as we await his second coming. Unless the bride is ready, the Lamb cannot claim the bride. Christ must have His perfect bride full of truth and righteousness for the Lord is upright and righteous.

You should also read the sequel to this hub.

Hello einron

Very nice Hub!

Another reason why there seems to be more women 7 to 1 is most of the men will be killed off in warfare. It will take awhile in the millenium for enough new boys to be born then to bring the ratio up to be more even. probably about twenty years for the ages to be closer together.

Come and see my Hub? Its about "What is wrong with the Chuches Today" my user name is the Lionswhelp. I am a new Hubber. I am using my name from the blessing given by Jacob and Mose to the Tribe of Dan or the Irish today, Genesis 49:16-18 & Dueteronomy 33:22-23.

The lionswhelp

The prophecy in Isaiah did not say that the man wanted to marry the 7 women (churches), but the 7 women (signifying all) took hold of the Lamb of God holding Him tight, and not letting Him go, doing their own thing.

The Lamb only wanted one righteous wife - Rev. 21:2 - "And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem (church), coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband."

What is wrong with the churches today? They are only pretenders to be the bride of God. They disobeyed the commandments of God in the 10 Commandments. They keep the doctrines of pagans in their worship of Christmas, Easter and Halloween (First 3 commandments).

They disobeyed also the 4th commandment in that they changed the seventh day of rest into the first day, Sunday. There is no commandment to change the day, Saturday, the seventh day of the week into Sunday, the first day of the week. Look at your calender and you will see that Sunday is the first day of the week.

God blessed the seventh day of the week in the very beginning of the Bible. In Genesis 2:2, God resteth, (vs. 3) and God blessed the sevent day and sanctified it.

Nowhere in the Bible does it say that God blessed and sanctified the seventh day, Sunday.

The churches followed the Roman Catholic Church in the change by Emperor Constantine in 321 A..D. The term "the Lord's Day" did not appear in any civil legislation concerning Sunday until the year 387 A.D., more than two generations after the first law. ("Sunday", Schaff-Herzog Encyclopedia of Religious Knowledge, Vol. XI, p. 147).

James 2:10

"For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all."

Most of the churches have broken the first 4 of the 10 Commandments of God.

Food for your thoughts. God bless.

Thank you sincerely also for understanding the 7th Day as being sanctified. From what I can tell, this Day is also sanctified according to when Christ actually rose from the dead. If His Spirit was given up at the 9th hour (3:00 p.m.) on Wednesday, then exactly 3 days and 3 nights later would not have been Sunday.

I anxiously await your response to this.

Thank you for your comments.

I have also read that Jesus died on a Wednesday and that makes it completely three days and three nights when He arose. Jesus kept the 7th day Sabbath when He was alive. Passover day (14th day of Nissan may occur on any day of the week.

The Jews never worshipped on Sunday and never will. Jesus was born a Jew and remained a Jew all His life. It was Emperor Constantine who enacted the law changing the day to Sunday in 321 A.D.

did it occur to you that perhaps what we read in Isaiah is LITERAL? That things will be so desparate that 7 women come to one man and do not ask for even food or clothing from him? Your interpretation leaves out the entire part before which leads up to it. Shameful.

Sorry I completely disagree with you. If you think that the Bible is literal, why read the Bible for prophecy? Do people read the Bible as a story book? May God open our understanding of the Bible. God bless those who want to obey Him.

Einron dear, thank you for this teaching and GOD bless you.

The seven churches mentioned in revelation 1$2,is it talking about the seven women? or the true wife of the one man.

einron profile image

einron Hub Author 23 months ago

Goodarch

The lamb of God must have a perfect wife without any blemish. God cannot accept any sin of any kind. If there is a perfect church, would the marriage of the lamb be not consumated?

Your interpretation of this scripture is wrong. You use it to passify women. Refer to verses 16-26. God would punish the women for their wickedness and the men will fall by the sword, their will be few to marry and 7 will want to mary one just to take away their disgrace.

einron profile image

einron Hub Author 22 months ago

williams

Isaiah 4:1 does not have verses 16-26. What Book of the Bible were you referring to?

Joshua 18 months ago

The seven women in this sense are literal, the taking away of their disgrace makes that obvious. Reading my Tanakh, the Jewish Bible minus the old testament, makes it absolutely clear that the days of Gog of Magog are today, read the context in Ezekiel, it's today, not 1000 years away, today. That gives revelations away as unreliable.

Joshua

John wrote the Revelations 2000 years ago and it was for the people of that time. Events evolve gradually from that time and it is not static. The revelations were made by Jesus Christ, the Son of God, and is relevant to us today.

I'm confused. In NLT it says In that day so FEW MEN will be left that seven women will fight for EACH MAN. So it doesn't seem to be talking about ONE MAN. Hence I think it seems to be a prophecy about a true event that will happen. I was just wondering whether it was a historical event that actually happened. I believe besides symbolism which might sometimes test the intellectually challenged(like me), the bible's prophecies are written in literal sense and is true and uncomplicated.

The prophecy is easy to understand for those who seek the word of God. May God open the understanding of those who obey Him. God's grace.

william 5 months ago

hey, ruling out literal meaning is disastrous. have you considered the chain of events in these scriptures Luke 23:27-30, Dan.11:37, Jer.31:22. do not over look 2 Thessalonians 2:7. just try to google, "the global war against baby girls." the desire of women in Daniel could be got from Genesis 3:16. the devil has greatly attacked the marriage institution and we can't over look the literal meaning of this verse. 'MY PEOPLE DIE FOR LACK OF KNOWLEDGE.'Please let them know. regards.

Jeremiah 31:22

A woman shall compass a man.

Explanation

A woman (church) shall compass a man. A true church will

encompass a man (Jesus). The true church will do everything what Jesus taught.

The other verses quoted are irrelevant to the topic.

The prophecy in the book of isaia about seven churches tells us that the are only seven churches in the world that goes with the same teachings of the apostles of Jesus christ and everything they do is the same in terms of batisim and many more..e.g God commanded Noah to build one large boad in order for those who believe for the coming of storm should be saved..Its the same to seven church in the world ,the one who belive in God will be save if he or she is the memmber of those particular churches.

Joseph

People may believe in the same church but their beliefs are rather different. Let us say there are 30 students in a class. You have the same teacher, read the same texts and come out different results. Just being in the same church does not qualify you entrance to heaven.
